The AF Family and Studentlund offer student life that is unique in Sweden. The strong relationship with student life is a success factor and the sense of commitment is considerable.
In AF Bostäder, Lund’s students have their own housing company – a free and independent actor that is 100 % on the side of the students. AF Bostäder will continue to be Sweden’s best student housing company and continue to develop Lund as Sweden’s best student city.
Lund University was founded in 1666. When the Academic Society was established in 1830, it offered some 50 students food, lodgings, appropriate social events and healthy activities. Nowadays, its operations affect more or less all of the approximately 30 000 students in Lund.
“The AF Family is something unique in Swedish student life,” says Henrik Krantz, CEO of AF Bostäder. “It brings together all types of students. The AF Family consists of the Academic Society, the AF Building and AF Bostäder. Together with the student nations and student unions, we form the coordinating association, Studentlund.
The Academic Society is run by students, for students. Its activities include debates, media, music, student revues, literature, science and parties. The Academic Society’s council appoints most of the board members of AF Bostäder and the students’ own housing ombudsman.
Located in the middle of Lundagård, the AF Building is the obvious meeting point for the students. The AF Building is a limited company and houses the Academic Society’s activities as well as a café, party events and conferences.
The student nations run social life in parallel to studies. There is an opportunity to get involved in everything from nightclubs, pubs and bars to sports, student revues and festivities. The student unions are linked to their respective institutions, with a mission to monitor the quality of study programmes, organise career days and so on.
“Thanks to the AF Family, AF Bostäder has a greater insight into student life than any other actor in the student housing market,” says Henrik Krantz. “Using this knowledge, we have developed into a shaper of the built environment, developing long-term, sustainable city districts where students and Lund residents can have a good future. It is our mission to contribute to Lund’s development, strengthen Lund as a university city, and make studies accessible for as many people as possible.”
“Our student housing is among the least expensive in Sweden, the queue period is among the shortest in Sweden and the conditions are the same for everyone in the queue,” states Henrik Krantz. “We set no requirements regarding background, references or contacts. As long as you are studying at Lund University, are a member of Studentlund and fulfil our requirements relating to the pace of study, you are welcome to stay with us.”
In its role as the students’ own housing company, it is self-evident for AF Bostäder to be involved in Lund’s student life.
“There are many of us who share the responsibility of solving the student housing shortage in Lund,” states Henrik Krantz. “That’s why we are very willing to act as a sounding board on housing matters and construction processes, for example when student nations want to develop student housing. As a member of the sector organisation, Student Accommodation Association, we also pursue student housing issues nationally.”
AF Bostäder has been the principal sponsor of the Lund Carnival since 2014. In 2018, the company will support student fitness with an initiative focusing on the Lundaloppet fun run, in which 500 students jog under the AF Bostäder flag. AF Bostäder is also involved in the AF Building and therefore supports the AF Building’s rebuilding project plans for the next few years.
“The students are our employers. Safeguarding the strong connection with student life is a precondition for succeeding in our objectives. It is also in everyone’s interests that we help the students to develop Lund’s amazing student life. An investment in student life is an investment in the future,” concludes Henrik Krantz.
