The students are requesting more spaces for studies, activities and spending time together. For the past two years, AF Bostäder has therefore been setting up more and more get-together spaces. The caretakers are responsible for the design, as they are best placed to know what the students want. The students’ new activity rooms are very popular and more are being planned.
“The caretakers are closest to the students in our organisation,” says Anna, former Property Manager at AF Bostäder. “They meet the students on a daily basis and receive a lot of tips about things that we can do better. The caretakers also have the best overview of the properties where the students live. They know what is lacking and they can assess what would be suitable when setting up an activity room.”
The customers want spaces where they can meet and socialise, above all those who live in apartments without communal areas. Getting to know people from all over the world is an important part of student life.
“We will help to provide spaces for getting together where we can and we now have a cost-efficient model that works well,” says Anna. “Using simple and smart solutions, we transform unutilised spaces into places for studies, bike repairs, socialising and games. These spaces are often adjacent to existing functions. If that’s the case, we know that the spaces will be used and that they will also be simple and inexpensive to maintain.”
Each caretaker has their own budget, which can be used separately or jointly, for setting up these spaces. Creativity is flourishing among students and staff, and proposals are flooding in.
“We are into our second year of these initiatives and now lounges, table tennis rooms, bike workshops and socialising spaces are available at more and more places,” says Anna. “Our initiatives in 2020 included setting up a lounge by the Ulrikedal laundry room, placing a giant hammock in the Marathon courtyard and building a nice games room at Kämnärsrätten with space for table tennis and pool.”
“These initiatives for creating get-together spaces have been enjoyable for both students and staff. Caretakers and customers discuss and develop various proposals together and the feedback on the finished spaces is enormously positive. At the same time, the projects help to foster dynamics and a sense of community within AF Bostäder, and to further strengthen our customer focus,” says Anna.
