Congratulations Lund students – AF Bostäder celebrates its 40th anniversary!
This year it is 40 years since AF Bostäder – Lund students’ own housing company – was formed. We will celebrate and highlight this in many different ways during the year. And we hope you will join us!
Akademiska Föreningen (AF) was formed in Lund as far back as 1830, not primarily to safeguard the students’ interests, but actually to keep tabs on them. Yes, that’s right, the average age of the students, a group that consisted of young men, was low and student life was rowdy. Drawing inspiration from the English college system, it was therefore decided that AF would organise food and accommodation for around 50 students, and the first student quarters were established at Sylwanska Gården. The arrangement was both strict and well monitored, which was not particularly popular, and the student nations soon took over AF, purchased Sylwanska Gården and Lund’s first type of housing with student influence saw the light of day.
In the post-war years, university places were in great demand, housing construction took off and student housing operations expanded considerably. In the 1980s, it became clear that properties and housing had to be managed more efficiently and on a larger scale. And in 1983, AF’s housing operation became an independent foundation with the business concept of providing housing to active students at Lund University, as well as members of Akademiska Föreningen.
Today, AF Bostäder is one of Sweden’s largest student housing companies with long-term, sustainable and pleasant accommodation for 6 000 in Lund – and student influence, relations with Akademiska Föreningen and all our connections with student life remain in place.
This year we celebrate 40 years as the students’ own housing company – come along and celebrate with us!
