Stronger procedures in place when students’ feel bad

Over half of Sweden’s students are affected by some kind of mental health problem. For this reason, AF Bostäder works actively on social sustainability issues with initiatives such as the Help information project. For increased security, the company has now produced detailed flow charts for occasions when a student feels bad.

“It is often our caretakers who are contacted when something happens that affects security among the students, or if someone seems lonely or depressed,” says Elin Svensson, Social Coordinator at AF Bostäder. “It is a big responsibility and important that the caretakers feel secure in such situations. All staff members have completed the training course in “First Aid for Mental Health”, and now we have also strengthened our existing procedures with flow charts that the caretakers are to follow if something should happen.”

The new procedures have been developed jointly by the caretakers, housing area managers, Property Manager and Social Coordinator. The procedures outline step-by-step the questions that are to be asked, the measures that are to be taken and who to contact in various scenarios.

“There are several aims. Both students and caretakers are to feel secure in talking about these issues. We are to handle all incidents in an objective and structured way, even when sensitive matters are involved. The customers are to be treated in the same way, regardless of where they live. We will also ensure that everyone receives the right information, and that the case always reaches the relevant person in our organisation,” says Elin Svensson.
