Aspegrenska huset becomes student housing once again

March 17, 2026

Located directly next to AF-borgen, Aspegrenska huset is considered Lund’s first modern student residence, with roots in student life dating back to the 19th century. A historic renovation is now beginning in which AF Bostäder will restore Aspegrenska huset as student housing, creating space for 17 students.

Aspegrenska huset at Sankt Annegatan 1 was designed in its current form by Hans Westman, known for several of Lund’s student housing buildings, and was completed in 1946. The house was named after the inspector Gustaf Aspegren, owner of an earlier student barracks that once stood on the same site.

“The original building was constructed in 1840”, says Henrik Krantz, CEO of AF Bostäder. “The house remained in the Aspegren family until 1902, when it was purchased by Akademiska Föreningen, already with plans to make room for a possible new building”.

The old building was demolished in 1946 with the intention of constructing a prototype building for student housing designed by Hans Westman. The new building can be regarded as the first modern student residence in Lund. It is also Akademiska Föreningen’s first student housing building and a predecessor to areas such as Tomegapsgården, Studentlyckan, Ulrikedal and Delphi.

“The building carries Westman’s signature style, including façades clad in red brick and divided into sections separated by bands of white marble”, says Henrik Krantz. “We are now undertaking a renovation in which, with great care for Westman’s characteristic period details, we will create modern apartments, mainly shared apartments for friends but also a few one-room apartments”.

“It feels meaningful to preserve cultural values of historical importance to Lund’s student life, while also creating more student housing in one of the best locations in Lund’s cultural quarter, right next to AF-borgen and Lundagård. The renovation will begin in 2026, with planned move-in around the turn of the year. We look forward to seeing Aspegrenska huset buzzing with new life and once again bringing joy to Lund’s students,” says Henrik Krantz.
