It is well-known that we feel better in mind and body when we exercise. That is why in recent years, AF Bostäder has invited its tenants to take part in activities such as fun runs and league games in various sports, in cooperation with LUGI Motion. The interest from students is considerable and the atmosphere is great. Exercising is not only beneficial, but also very enjoyable.
When the body is in motion, it kick-starts lots of things that are good for health. We feel livelier, stronger and even happier. Exercise prevents diseases and helps the brain to manage stress and feeling low. In addition, we sleep better, our memory improves and we find it easier to concentrate and to solve problems.
“We live in a time when being sedentary has become one of the biggest threats to our health,” says Elin Svensson, Social Coordinator at AF Bostäder. “And for students this can easily become long days in lecture halls and in front of the computer.”
The Public Health Agency of Sweden recommends that adults exercise regularly. The pulse is to be raised for at least 150-300 minutes per week. And the more often, the better.
“Exercise is most enjoyable when you do it together,” says Elin Svensson. “In the past, we used to sponsor our students’ registration for the Lundaloppet fun run, but in 2019 we started our own Marathon marathon in connection with the opening of our Marathon housing area. The first race, which was over 4.2 kilometres, was a success and many students ran, put on fancy dress and had fun. During the pandemic we had to cancel it, but in 2022 we were able to invite the students to run again, this time over a somewhat longer distance. And again, many students entered the race.”
The success of the Marathon marathon whetted the appetite for exercise and in 2021 AF Bostäder and LUGI Motion also set up popular sports leagues for students in football, volleyball and floorball. In autumn 2022, it was time again, and a total of 18 teams registered.
“LUGI Motion takes care of the fixture lists, league tables, halls, referees and t-shirts, while AF Bostäder provides registration fees, marketing and motivation,” says Elin Svensson. “All the students need to do is get a team together, register and tie the laces on their training shoes. Everyone plays five games per season, and we have made guest appearances with a staff team – a really fun way to meet the students.”
“We have also organised a step-counting competition, and all our tenants get good discounts on a gym card at Actic. At the same time, it’s important to remember that exercise doesn’t have to be at high intensity. A brisk walk every day and regular cycling are just as beneficial as taking part in sports,” says Elin Svensson.
